In the last article, we highlighted the different ways you could start as a freelancer and we hope you have taken the leap! Starting is the hardest part and since you have done that already, finding a job is the next step. There are, however, a few things you need to have in place that can increase your chances of finding a job as a freelancer, irrespective of the industry you are in.
A good way to start finding a job as a freelancer is to create a LinkedIn profile. This helps you stand out as you can state your skillset and use keywords that are specific to your industry in the summary of your profile. As a freelancer, having a professional outlook is important and LinkedIn can help you achieve just that. On LinkedIn, you can connect with fellow freelancers and professionals and grow your network. Set your LinkedIn as “open to work”. This will increase your chances of finding a job.
Simply put, a portfolio is a document that shows a bio of yourself and all the previous work you have done in a particular field. It could also include your interests and pricing as well as your contact information. This could be in form of a website, or a link to a drive containing all your work. The more creatively you present and package your portfolio, the better, so keep that in mind. Creative sites like Canva, Squarespace, and Wix, make it easy to choose a template and easily create a portfolio.
Technology has made things way easier and from the comfort of your home, you can provide solutions to problems through your skills. There are so many freelancing platforms where you can register on and get jobs easily. Do your research properly to know the platform-specific to your industry and sign up for it. Understanding the growth rate of your industry will help guide you on who to contact and where to focus your freelance job search.
Share the information, that you are now working in this model and can be hired. People who know you can connect you with somebody else much more easily.
Finally, as much as you want to start earning the big bucks, it is important to know that you might not get a great paying gig at first, and that can be disappointing. To combat this, make an effort to prioritize the experience over how much the job will pay you. Focus more on the exposure you will get in your chosen niche or the much-needed contacts in your field to which you will have access.
It may be challenging at first, but it’s certainly achievable! Good luck in your job search and stay tuned for the next article!
